VAT Compliance Monitor

Monitoring of VAT input claims, output declarations and return timeliness against SARS requirements.

📖 6 min read🎯 Intermediate✍️ Updated 2026

Why VAT monitoring prevents assessments and penalties

Public entities registered for VAT must declare output VAT, claim only valid input VAT and submit returns on time, and errors expose the institution to SARS assessments, penalties and fruitless expenditure findings under the MFMA. Continuous monitoring catches invalid claims and late returns before they crystallise. AuditPro Core monitors VAT input claims, output declarations and return timeliness against SARS requirements.

Input VAT requires a valid tax invoice

Input VAT may only be claimed where a valid tax invoice with the required particulars is held. Claims on invalid or missing invoices are reversed on assessment with penalties.

Output VAT must be complete

All taxable supplies must carry output VAT, and under-declaration is the more serious exposure. Reconciling declared output to the revenue ledger confirms completeness.

Timeliness is a separate obligation

Returns and payments are due by the prescribed date irrespective of the figures, and lateness attracts its own penalties and interest. Filing discipline is monitored independently of accuracy.

How AuditPro Core Bridges the Gap

  • Input validation: AuditPro Core flags input claims lacking a valid tax invoice or required particulars.
  • Output reconciliation: declared output VAT is reconciled to revenue to test completeness.
  • Deadline tracking: return and payment due dates are monitored to prevent late submission.
  • Audit-ready export: VAT exceptions and the return history feed the compliance file.

Key Takeaways

  • Input VAT needs a valid tax invoice to be claimable.
  • Reconcile output VAT to revenue to confirm completeness.
  • Timeliness carries penalties independent of accuracy.
  • Monitoring catches issues before SARS assessment.
